The Memorial Marauders kicked off their tournament title defence with a victory on Thursday night.

Memorial defeated the Sydney Academy Wildcats 3-1 to begin the annual Mae Kibyuk Memorial Green and Gold Hockey Tournament at Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.

Owen Gracie, Colby Viva and Jasper Allain netted goals for the Marauders.

Jaxon MacNamara had the lone goal for the Wildcats.

Memorial’s Andrew Forrest made four saves. Sydney Academy’s Ethan Lewis stopped 34 of 37 shots.

The Marauders return to action on Friday when they face the Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals of Antigonish at 2 p.m., and the Sommet Cougars of Halifax at 8 p.m. Both games at Emera Centre Northside.

In other tournament action on Thursday, Riverview defeated Glace Bay 5-2.

Cohen MacIsaac had two goals and two assists while James Eddy, Alex Arsenault and Nick Lawrence also scored goals for the Ravens.

Stephen Mann and Brody Walker replied with goals for the Panthers.

Riverview’s Kayden Mollons made 21 saves. Glace Bay’s Bryden Kelly started the game and was later replaced by Brandon MacNeil. Statistics for the Panthers goaltenders were not accurately reported on the game sheet.
